Unable to wirelessly connect to shared folders

I have a laptop and a HTPC both running Win 7-64. I'm having a hard time getting the laptop to connect to shared folders on the HTPC. I'm not using the Windows "Homegroup" connection type, just straight up "sharing" a folder on the HTPC and setting open permissions to read/write, which then show up under Network not Homegroup. I can see all the HTPC's shared folders under the laptops...
